The Mission Plazas
The 16th Street plazas are getting their first major redesign in more than 20 years. Here's where it stands and how to weigh in.
Why the plazas matter
The plazas at 16th Street and 24th Street are some of the busiest public spaces in the Mission. Thousands of people pass through every day to catch BART or Muni, run errands, and meet friends. Too often, they haven’t felt clean, safe, or welcoming.
Add a few sentences here about why the plazas matter to you and what you’re pushing for as the District 9 director.
The 16th Street redesign
BART is studying long-term changes to the 16th Street plaza around four goals: safety, access, maintenance, and placekeeping — making sure the redesign reflects the neighborhood’s identity.
- 2025: Project kickoff in June, followed by stakeholder meetings and a first open house that fall.
- Early 2026: Design concepts developed.
- Spring 2026: Community office hours, a community meeting, and a public survey on the design toolkit and concepts.
- Mid-2026: Cost estimates and a final design toolkit.
Because of BART’s fiscal crisis, construction will depend on outside funding. Neighbors asked that the neighborhood’s identity be built into the design, and BART has committed to co-creating the art and design details with the community once funding is secured.
